So it has been a while since I last wrote. Sorry, dedicated readers. Nothing much has happened since my last posted, but I will give you a little bit of an update just so for all those who are bored have something to fill the minutes of their lives.
So, as I mentioned in the last post, my roomie came on Sunday afternoon. I went with Rufi to go pick him up and he moved into the room with me. It has been really nice. I like him a lot. He does not complain about me snoring too loudly and I told him right up front about it too, and he did not have a problem at all. He also likes the room cold at night, which is a HUGE plus because I cannot sleep at night if it is too warm. So we mesh well on the climate level.
We also have become pretty close (nearly friends, I would say). The second day he was here, we had a pretty long and philosophical discussion about politics and ethics. It was interesting and so needed. I have not engaged in that sort of discussion in what seems like forever. It was also nice to be able to discuss these issues with someone whose opinion and thoughts I have not heard before. We have been hanging out a lot too. We have explored the city together, watched movies in the room together, and have really bonded. Today (Saturday) I actually vented to him about stuff going on here. I am not trying to make drama or anything (because that was one thing I was not going to miss this semester), but I have just had some issues adjusting recently. Nothing to worry about, folks, I promise. I have been able to vent to Liz and now Will, so it has been good. I think that after this semester, we are going to remain good friends, which makes me incredibly happy.
So today was also my first full week without anything to do and without classes. I have found things to fill my time, do not worry, and you can view pictures of the things I have done and places I have visited on Facebook. I have managed to see a good portion of the city already, which is exciting because now I can take Will to these places and discover and explore these locations again. I have visited some natural sights and have gone to many of the museums that Salamanca has to offer, so it has been a good variety of things I have done.
Today we (Will, Jenna, and I) went to the market that Salamanca has every day. It is located very close to the Plaza Mayor and it is a couple hundred years old. We entered to the over-powering scent of fresh fish. The market was two levels big, so we just walked around to see what they had to offer. Mostly what they had there was fresh meat and seafood, such as fish, clams, and ham (of course). There were also a lot of different types of cheeses, fresh bread, vegetables, and fruits. There were even, sprinkled among the meat stands, some bakery items (donuts, sweet-bread, etc.). However, there were some really interesting items within this extravaganza of food. There were whole baby pigs that were freshly butchered at someone's request, there were all of the internal organs of animals (cow tongue, brain, heart, liver, etc.), and there were some interesting sea creatures as well (whole octopus, calamari, etc.). I left there thinking that it was really cool, while Jenna wholly disagreed with me, but I thought that it was neat for the experience, not necessarily because the items they had for sale looked appetizing.
Tomorrow (Sunday) I am going to this city just north of Salamanca called Zamora. My intercambio partner, Sara, offered to take me there, so we decided that tomorrow would be a good opportunity to do so. I am really excited for this, because I have heard great things about the city. It is a lot smaller than Salamanca, but it has a lot of charm and history. Precisely what I am looking for. Super stoked.
Then, next week, I am finally going to meet with another intercambio person with whom I have been in contact for several weeks. The rest of the week is going to be filled with fun activities and things to do, and then on Friday I leave with ISA for Sevilla, a city in the south of Spain. It is one of the quintessential Spanish cities and one that I have dreamt of visiting for a very long time. We leave on Friday and get back on Sunday. Be sure to check out my Facebook for some photos after the trip. Monday after I return from this excursion, I will start my classes for the semester finally. I am also excited for that to happen because it will be something else to fill my time.
I have found "my place" next to the river in Salamanca where I go to blow off some steam, sit and relax, or think about life. One day this week I got up in the morning, thinking it was after 8:30, woke up Will, and then realized that it was only 7:30! So since I was up this early, I thought that it would be cool to go down to the river and watch the sun rise. I got to my spot, and immediately had a moment of inspiration for a book or a poem or something. I wrote down everything that came to my mind. I missed the sunrise though, but it was pretty cloudy, so it was not a big deal. I will have to go again some morning when the weather is better to watch the sun rise. I really like the spot and I have determined that when i grow up, I must live near a river or a body of water because of the importance they play in my life.
